This guide is designed to help you set up your new Roku device with ease, ensuring you can enjoy your favorite shows and movies in no time.
We've broken down the steps into simple instructions and included tips that might be particularly helpful for those new to Roku to help you set up your new Roku device.
Unpacking Your Roku
- Inside your Roku box, you will find:
The Roku player
A remote control for the Roku
Various cables (we'll explain what each one does)
Connecting Your Roku to the TV
- Finding the Right Cable
Inside your box, there's a cable that looks similar to the one in this picture. This is called an HDMI cable.
Tip: The HDMI cable is what you use to connect the Roku player to your TV.
- Plugging In the HDMI Cable
Look at the back or side of your TV for slots labeled "HDMI 1," "HDMI 2," etc.
Choose any of these slots and remember its number (this is important for later). Plug one end of the HDMI cable into this slot.
Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into your Roku player.
Powering Up Your Roku
Find the power cable in your Roku box.
Plug one end into your Roku and the other end into a power outlet in your wall.
Turning On Your TV and Selecting the Right Input
Using Your TV Remote:
With the remote that came with your TV (not the Roku remote), look for a button labeled "Input" or "Source."
Press this button until you see "HDMI 1" (or that number we told you to remember earlier) appear on your TV screen.
Following the Roku Setup Instructions
Once the Roku welcome screen appears on your TV, you're ready to set it up and start streaming. Here's how to connect your Roku to your Wi-Fi network and set up a Roku account, if you don't already have one.
Pick Up the Roku Remote
Grab the Roku remote that came with your device. It's time to use it to navigate through the setup process.
Connect to Your Wi-Fi Network
Select 'Settings' from the Main Menu
On your TV screen, you'll see a variety of options. Use the Roku remote to navigate to and select the 'Settings' menu.
Go to 'Network'
In the 'Settings' menu, look for and select the 'Network' option. This will take you to the network settings where you can connect your Roku to your Wi-Fi.
Choose 'Set up connection'
Within the 'Network' settings, you'll find an option to 'Set up connection.' Choose this to start the process of connecting to your Wi-Fi network.
Select 'Wireless'
Roku will give you a choice between a wired and wireless connection. Since we're connecting to Wi-Fi, select 'Wireless.' Roku will start searching for available networks.
Find Your Wi-Fi Network
Once Roku has finished searching, it will display a list of available Wi-Fi networks. Scroll through the list until you find yours. If you have many neighbors, you might see many networks. Look for the name (SSID) of your Wi-Fi network.
Enter Your Wi-Fi Password
After selecting your network, you will be prompted to enter your Wi-Fi password. Use the Roku remote to type in your password. Remember, Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive, so make sure you enter it exactly as it is, including any upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols.
Tip: If you find it challenging to type with the remote, take your time. It's important to get this step right to connect successfully.
Wait for the Connection to Complete
After entering your password, select 'Connect.' Roku will attempt to connect to your Wi-Fi network. This may take a few moments.
Once connected, Roku will confirm that you're connected to the internet. You might see messages checking for a connection to the internet, then to the Roku service, followed by a success message.
Set Up a Roku Account
If you don't have a Roku account, you'll be guided to create one. This usually involves visiting a website on your computer or smartphone and entering a code displayed on your TV screen.
A Roku account lets you add channels from the Roku Channel Store and manage your device settings.
Watching Roku on Your TV
To start watching content through Roku, make sure your TV is set to the correct HDMI input (the number you remembered earlier).
Changing Back to Watch Regular TV
If you want to switch back to watching regular TV:
Use your TV remote and press the "Input" or "Source" button repeatedly until you return to your usual TV channel or input.
Remembering the Steps
It might be helpful to write down which HDMI number you used for Roku and keep this note near your TV.
