How to Perform a Hard Reboot on Your iPhone: A Step-by-Step Guide

Updated: Jun 24

Are you experiencing issues with your iPhone? Performing a hard reboot (also known as a force restart) doesn't delete any data but is a quick and effective way to resolve many common iPhone issues. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to hard reboot different iPhone models. Remember, the method varies slightly depending on the model of your iPhone.

For iPhone 8 or Later (Including iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and later models):

  1. Quickly Press and Release the Volume Up Button: Press the Volume Up button on the left side of your iPhone and immediately release it.

  1. Quickly Press and Release the Volume Down Button: Immediately after step 1, press and release the volume down button located just below the volume up button.

  2. Press and Hold the Side Button: Hold the side button (located on the right side of your iPhone) until the Apple logo appears, then release the button.

For iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus:

  1. Press and Hold the Volume Down Button and the Sleep/Wake Button: Press and hold the volume down button on the left side of your iPhone while simultaneously holding the sleep/wake button on the right side. Keep holding both buttons.

  2. Wait for the Apple Logo: Continue to hold both buttons until the Apple logo appears, then release both buttons.

For iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, or iPhone SE (1st generation):

  1. Press and Hold the Home Button and the Sleep/Wake Button: Press and hold the Home button located below the screen while simultaneously holding the sleep/wake button located on the right side (iPhone 6s or later) or the top (iPhone SE and earlier models).

  2. Wait for the Apple Logo: Continue to hold both buttons until the Apple logo appears, then release both buttons.

After the Apple logo appears, your iPhone will go through its startup sequence. This process can take a minute or two. Once your iPhone has rebooted, it should be back up and running normally. You will be required to enter your passcode after the device restarts. This is because the hard reboot process bypasses biometric authentication methods such as Face ID or Touch ID for security reasons.

If your iPhone still isn't responding after a hard reboot, it might need more specific troubleshooting or a hardware issue. In such cases, contacting Apple Support or visiting an Apple Store might be the best course of action.

Remember, a hard reboot is generally safe and does not erase your personal data. However, it's always a good idea to regularly back up your iPhone to safeguard your data.

Hopefully, this guide helps you get your device back on track smoothly and swiftly!
